5G eSIM in Vietnam: Coverage, Speed, Compatibility & What Tourists Need to Know

Last Updated: Thursday, August 13, 2026

Landing in Vietnam and having no mobile data can make the first few hours of your trip surprisingly stressful. You may need Google Maps to find your hotel, Grab to book a ride, WhatsApp or Zalo to contact someone, or simply an internet connection to check your travel plans.

For international visitors, a 5G eSIM in Vietnam can be one of the easiest ways to stay connected without buying and installing a physical SIM card.

Vietnam has several major mobile networks, including Viettel, MobiFone, and Vinaphone. Among them, Viettel is particularly popular with travelers because of its extensive coverage, while MobiFone can also be a convenient choice, especially for visitors who need calling services.

If you're wondering which is the best network in Vietnam for tourists, here's what you should know before choosing your eSIM.

Is 5G Available in Vietnam?

Yes. Vietnam has commercially deployed 5G networks, and coverage continues to expand.

Viettel provides a dedicated 5G coverage map and states that its 5G service is available nationwide and continues to expand.

MobiFone officially launched commercial 5G service in March 2025, initially focusing on major cities and provincial centers, with plans to continue expanding coverage.

However, having a 5G eSIM does not automatically mean you will have a 5G connection everywhere. Your actual connection depends on several factors, including your location, phone compatibility, network coverage, and local conditions.

In busy areas such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and other major tourist destinations, travelers can generally expect good mobile connectivity. Coverage may vary when traveling into remote mountains, rural areas, or less-developed regions.

Viettel eSIM Vietnam: A Popular Choice for Tourists

If you're searching for a Viettel eSIM Vietnam, one of the biggest advantages is network coverage.

Viettel is widely regarded by travelers as one of the strongest options for nationwide connectivity, particularly for people who plan to travel beyond Vietnam's major cities. Recent traveler discussions frequently highlight Viettel's coverage in rural and mountainous destinations.

This makes a Viettel eSIM for tourists especially useful if your itinerary includes destinations such as:

• Hanoi

• Ha Long Bay

• Sapa

• Ninh Binh

• Da Nang

• Hoi An

• Da Lat

• Ho Chi Minh City

• Phu Quoc

For travelers who want to use Google Maps, upload photos, communicate with family, or work remotely while moving around Vietnam, reliable coverage can be more important than simply choosing the cheapest package.

What Does a Viettel eSIM Offer?

Vietnam Airports currently offers a Viettel eSIM Vietnam option with 5GB of high-speed data per day. It is a data-only eSIM, meaning it does not support traditional voice calls or SMS.

This option is particularly suitable for travelers who mainly use:

• Google Maps

• WhatsApp

• Zalo

• Facebook

• Instagram

• Email

• Zoom

• Grab

If you don't need a Vietnamese phone number, a data-only eSIM can keep things simple.

MobiFone eSIM Vietnam: Another Option

Viettel isn't the only choice.

A MobiFone eSIM Vietnam may be more suitable for travelers who want both mobile data and calling functionality.

Vietnam Airports currently offers a MobiFone eSIM package with 3GB of data per day for 15 days, together with 40 minutes of international and domestic calls. SMS functionality is available after topping up.

MobiFone also operates a commercial 5G network. The company says its 5G service can reach speeds of up to 1.5 Gbps under suitable conditions, although real-world speeds will vary depending on location, device, network traffic, and other factors.

For tourists staying mainly in large cities and needing traditional calling services, MobiFone can therefore be worth considering.

Viettel vs Mobifone Vietnam: Which Is Better?

There isn't one answer for every traveler.

When comparing Viettel vs Mobifone Vietnam, think about how you plan to use your phone.

For someone asking about the best mobile network Vietnam has to offer, Viettel is a strong choice if nationwide coverage is your priority. If you need a local calling option, MobiFone may make more sense.

Does Your Phone Support a Vietnam 5G eSIM?

Before purchasing any eSIM, check whether your phone supports eSIM technology.

Most recent flagship and mid-range smartphones from Apple, Samsung, Google, and other manufacturers support eSIM, but compatibility varies by model and region.

You should check:

1. Whether your phone supports eSIM.

2. Whether the device is carrier-unlocked.

3. Whether it supports the required 4G/5G bands.

4. Whether your phone allows multiple SIM profiles.

5. Whether your device is compatible with the selected network.

A 5G-compatible phone is also necessary if you specifically want to connect to a 5G network. Otherwise, the eSIM can still provide mobile data through available 4G networks.

Why Buy Your Vietnam eSIM Before Flying?

One major advantage of an eSIM is that you can arrange your connection before leaving home.

Instead of arriving at the airport and searching for a SIM card shop, you can purchase your eSIM in advance and receive the QR code by email.

Vietnam Airports provides eSIM services alongside airport fast-track and car transfer services.

This means you can organize several parts of your arrival before boarding your flight.

For example, you can arrange:

• Vietnam eSIM

• Airport pickup

• Airport fast-track service

• Departure transfer

The Vietnam Airports eSIM activation guide also explains the setup process and recommends carrying a printed copy of the QR code as a backup.
